#KiniNews: Don't waste time on opportunistic gov't backbenchers - Guan Eng, Mat Sabu

Pakatan Harapan is in need of a political reset following the failure to vote down Budget 2021, said DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng and Amanah president Mohamad Sabu.

The duo said the budget vote on Tuesday showed that there have been no shifts of allegiance from the Perikatan Nasional side and that Harapan should stop wasting time with them.

"Clearly, these government backbenchers are adept at playing political games to gain maximum leverage from the PN government," they added.

#KiniNews: Budget 2021 passes first vote, Anwar opts not to show numbers

The opposition decided not to reveal its numbers in the Dewan Rakyat today after a group of Umno MPs decided not to derail the Budget 2021 during the first of a series of votes.

While opposition lawmakers expressed their objection to the budget through a voice vote, they, however, did not seek a bloc vote which would require those votes to be counted.

The budget would now move to the committee stage, where there would be more debates and votes.

#KiniNews: Jasa rebranded as J-Kom, will not be a propaganda machine, says Saifuddin

Communications and Multimedia Minister Saifuddin Abdullah said that reviving the Special Affairs Department (Jasa) will take less than the RM85.5 million it has been allocated.

He also assured the people that the agency will not be headed by politicians or be used for political propaganda for the Perikatan Nasional government.

Speaking during his Budget 2021 winding-up speech this afternoon, Saifuddin said Jasa would be rebranded as "Jabatan Komunikasi Komuniti" (J-KOM) and be used for grassroots communication.

#KiniNews | Najib: Over RM81 million allocation for Jasa unacceptable

Former premier Najib Abdul Razak (Umno-Pekan) said today that the four-fold increase in allocation under Budget 2021 to revive the Special Affairs Department (Jasa) propaganda unit was "unacceptable" and would court public anger.

He said this in his debate of the Supply Bill (Budget) 2021 in the Dewan Rakyat today.

"In times of a crisis when allocations are more needed to save the people, the introduction of a four-fold increased allocation for Jasa compared to times under BN is hard to accept and has courted public anger.

"I can accept if the allocation is used to buy face masks or hand sanitiser for the people or given to parents as a replacement for their children's missed breakfasts under the Rancangan Makanan Tambahan scheme," he said.

#KiniNews | Anwar: No guarantee yet Budget 2021 will be easily passed

Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim said today that it shouldn't be assumed Budget 2021 will receive full support in Parliament if it isn't amended to take better care of the people.

The Port Dickson MP said this in response to the speech delivered by Finance Minister Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz on Friday which did not seem to attempt to secure bipartisan support for the budget as it did not incorporate demands made by Pakatan Harapan MPs.

"I would like to stress here, I do not want there to be an easy assumption. The situation now has changed.

"The government, the finance minister, and prime minister are aware that there is not yet a guarantee that the budget in its current form unless amended to take care of the people as per our (Harapan) demands, will be easily passed," said Anwar in his debate of the Supply Bill (Budget) 2021.

Budget 2021 is RM322.54 billion, up 10.61 percent from the previous year and is the largest budget on record.

This is an expansionary budget where the government cuts back marginally on operational expenditure while ramping up development expenditure.

Given that revenue for this year and the next is projected to be below the 2019 level, Malaysia will have to make up for the shortfall with massive borrowings.
